Copenhagen Day 1

My friends and I were shopping at Tescos when we found out about the horrifying tsunami incident. It was heart-wrenching to see the aftermath of the tsunami disaster. I found out later that nearly 6000 Swedish were killed in Phuket Island. I truly truly understood the meaning of the Chinese saying -Challenge the mountains but never the waters. (Qi Shan Mo Qi Shui).

Anyway I digress. My friend and I had accepted an invitation from our Danish friend, Noel to celebrate New Year in Denmark. So this is my account of what happened over there. Hope you like it!

Day 1: Arrival at Copenhagen

We took British Airways from London Heathrow to Copenhagen Airport (Kobenhavn Kastrup). Noel's parents came to pick us up and we were greeted warmly with hugs! It was rather chilly in Copenhagen (about 0-2 degrees). Right, for the benefit of everybody, here are a few quick facts about Copenhagen:

1) Denmark is an archipelago and is one of the Scandivanian countries. (Scandivanian countries consist of Denmark, Sweden and Norway). Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, which is divided into two islands. The airport is located on the smaller island called Amager (pronounced "A-ma").

2) Danes drive on the right side of the road. (Which meant total confusion for me, especially when crossing the roads)

3) The Danes use Danish Krones. (pronounced "kro-ner"). 100DKR is equivalent to approximately RM66.

4) The Danes speak Danish and English. In stark contrast to the French, Danes are very friendly and you feel pretty safe in Copenhagen. Streets are clean (with the exception of post New Year celebrations) and since the town is really compact, you can pretty much cover most of the major tourist sights and scenes by walking.

5) Denmark is home to Hans Christian Anderson, the author of well-known fairy tales such as the Ugly Duckling and the Little Mermaid.

Right... thats about it. I will continue with my adventure in Copenhagen.

Upon arrival at Noel's house (yes, accommodation was provided, thats why I went :P) I stared in awe at the lovely Christmas decorations and lights. It was Noel's belated birthday bash and he had over 20 people at his house for dinner. I was the latecomer, hehehe. Never mind. Noel's mom assured me that there was enough food to go around. So we did a round of "getting to know you" , shaking hands and trying to remember names... and I tell you, Filipino guys are sooo cute. You could just drool and forget about everything else.

Now the best part comes... food! We had avocado salad for starters, roast beef with vegetables and ... (drumroll) poached SALMON with CAVIAR! And it was such a huge serving I felt so shy looking at it.
Food was absolutely delicious. Of course, where there is good food we must have good wine. I quite like red, so I opted for red.
Then came the highlight of the event-cutting of the birthday cake.
Honestly, I tell you, that cake was huge. For my standards anyway. We usually have a 500g cake and thats it.
This one must have been 3kg or more. And it was smothered in lovely luxurious mocha cream.
Yummy.... and did I mention there were 2 cakes? Because there were so many people, Noel's parents ordered 2 cakes. So, there were 2 heavenly cakes...yummy
I was sooo bloated after the meal. Half of the group had to leave earlier as they were going on a skiing holiday in Sweden. The other half, including myself were getting geared up for salsa at the local dance club.

We called a cab to the city centre and started walking towards the direction of the club. Walking in a skirt and heels at 0 degrees with chilly wind in your face is not enjoyable. I was really looking foward to entering the club straightaway... shelter would be good.

Imagine our dissappointment and dismay when we arrived at the salsa club and it said "LUKKER" (closed).

Rats. Well Noel was more pissed than anyone of us because he had made reservations with the club and was assured that they were open for business that day. Anyway, a backup plan was needed...standing in the cold and shivering our butts off just wasn't a good idea.

So we went to a pub for drinks while the guys tried to figure out which club to go to next. Although it was only Wednesday night, the pub was packed with students. Having had red wine for dinner earlier... I wasnt too keen on drinking. Noel bought us one round of tequillas.

But Noel's friend Pete was kind enough to treat us to Sambooka (for those who know what it is, knows) so I had to down the yucky stuff. I know, for you good drinkers out there, Sambooka is expensive stuff and it is good... but I felt like I had just swallowed mouthwash.

Anyway...after that we started (or tried) to mix around with other people. I got to know a Romanian girl called Anna, who looked like a supermodel. Very well groomed and pretty. She was studying for her Masters in International Business. There was also a friend of Noel's who was studying in Cardiff for her Bachelor in Psychology, specialising in Organisational Behaviour.

We tried queueing up at the supposedly most exclusive club in town, only to be rejected by the bouncer because we were not on the guest list. By this time I was getting pretty tired and irritated and suggested taking a cab back to Noel's house to call it a day. After all I was really not a "kaki clubbing"... I wanted to reserve my energy for sight-seeing the next day!

In the end we had shawarmas (kebabs) for supper and took a cab home. I was freaking tired from all that walking and dropped flat on the bed.

"Welcome to Copenhagen", I whispered to myself.

Profile

Right... four years exactly into working life and suddenly I found the urgent need to ramble about my not so interesting life...here goes:

I am:
Liberal and radical on paper only. This is the basic description I would give myself. I am a good listener and usually offer sensible advice. If I don't sound like myself, its must be my evil twin at work :P

I am passionate about:
Music and Arts. Can't imagine what this world would be like without these two essential elements.

When I'm not working my head off I like:
Meeting new people from all walks of life and listening to their life experiences. I take things with an open mind (albeit not completely Zen like) and always remind myself not to take anything in life for granted.
And I wish:
All my friends, my family and everybody else who will somehow cross paths with me, a fulfulling life, in terms of work and relationships. And remember, you only live once. So make the best out of it. :)
