Ah bliss is the word

My sincere apologies for lack of updates. My punishing schedule has left me tired and disoriented, hence the tardiness in updates. I am sure most of you would be tired of staring at the birthday post by now, so here goes some of the stuff I have been meaning to post up but was unable to do it sooner:

1) Deepa-Raya celebrations. While West Malaysians can indulge in muruku and rendang at the same time, and enjoy one full week of blissful holidays, I still have to work from Monday to Wednesday. :( But the prospect of being able to visit my colleagues and pig out on cakes, curry, ketupat, satay etc...is very very tempting. I plan to take photos during my visits so you can have a look at the scrumptious food on display... hahahah

2) A late condolence message to our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi over the recent demise of his beloved wife, Datin Seri Endon binti Mahmood. The nation watches in grief as Pak Lah controls his emotions during the funeral of his wife. May he be strong enough to overcome this trying period of grief. I also wish to extend my condolences to Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting over the demise of his mother. A very strong woman who was widowed in her 40s, she gritted her teeth and brought up 11 children under extreme poverty. Her perseverance has paid off.

I will be concentrating on my Nanowrimo novel from next week onwards so updates will appear on My Nano '05.

Have a good weekend guys! I know this entry is kinda crappy but please bear with me as I have a novel to write ;P

One year on.. and going strong-A birthday dedication

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to you,

Happy Birthday to Memory Lane,

Happy Birthday to you.

This is a special entry dedicated to my very first blog, Memory Lane. It was on 23.10.2004, a year ago today when I decided that I wanted to have an avenue to voice my musings, thoughts on life and other stuff. I already had a personal website which had been running for two years, but the thought of having a weblog which I can update at any time I want to, without having to bother about the entire layout and content of a conventional website was too tempting. And so the miracle was born.

The following are some questions which I have been asked about this blog, and I will answer them in turn.

1)Why miracle8?

The year 2004 was a very wonderful year for me. I landed my dream job, lost weight, finally had the courage to drive, permed my hair(haha), did my very first important project which took me to Singapore, and most importantly, made a decision to patch things up with my then boyfriend. Life was looking very good from my angle, with lots of hope, aspirations, dreams, and lots of love. To me, 2004 was like a year full of miracles. And so the word "miracle" automatically came into mind for my weblog address.

2) On Number 8:

Being an avid follower of Lilian Too's feng shui tips, the year 2004 was the first year of period 8, whih guarantees a decade of wealth, health and more surprises in store, if the correct feng shui principles are applied. So naturally, I affixed number 8 after my blog address.

3) Is this an anonymous blog?

Strictly speaking, it is not anonymous for the very simple reason that I have links on the right to my personal webpage and if you do venture into the links you would know who I am. Furthermore, I have lots of pictures in my weblog and all of you would know how I look like in real life. So apart from the fact that my full name does not appear on this blog, the articles that you read here are as real as it gets. This is the real me, outside of work.

4) What have you gained as a result of blogging?

The first thing that came into my mind is: Absolutely wonderful blog friends. From Matty to Benji, whom I have met in person, to Peter, Wil, Kenny, SH, etc. etc. The list is too long for me to list down everybody here, but I believe it is fate which has brought you to my blog and I treasure each and every comment/tag you leave behind. :)

Secondly, blogging has helped me keep a track record of the things that I have been doing, and the magical moments I encountered during my travels. As the saying goes Carpe Diem, I have been able to seize most of my magical moments by jotting them down and posting them up on my blog. Re-reading my entries gives me absolute pleasure as I am constantly reminded of how beautiful life can be, as long as you stay optimistic and positive.

5) Are you not afraid that your employers would find out about this blog? And how it would affect you?

Yes, that problem did arise earlier this year in April, and I actually took down all my entries on Memory Lane for 2 weeks. It was a very painful decision to make as I had already fallen in love with writing and everytime I looked at the one mundane post when I clicked on my web address, I felt pain in my heart. Therefore, I decided to take the risk and start all over again. There are about 70 entries which I have decided not to re-post for personal reasons, so now what you are seeing are snippets from the past and of course recent bits of my life.

I do not blog about what happens at work, and I do not talk about people behind their backs, so whatever anybody reads here, are my heartfelt opinions about current issues and the things that I have been exposed to, or the places I have been. Of course you are entitled to have your say but at the same time, I have the right not to agree with you. ;)

6) Why don't you ping PPS?

Actually, I do like PPS. I find that a lot of good bloggers are out there, and PPS gives them an avenue for them to post their painstakingly written articles. Personally, my blog is my take on life, my journal, my life script which I am the main actress, the director and the producer. I do browse blogs which interest me and leave comments where I can. And usually this is how I get feedback from bloggers. I like to interact on a personal level and know the person better. And since I do not write jokes like Rojaks Daily/Kenny Sia, it is highly unlikely that people would actually revisit my blog unless they more or less know me. I leave it to fate really. Too much fame can be dangerous... I prefer to be known as a person, the friend who would always be there for you, rather than the fella who has balls the size of coconuts (hahahaha). But this is personal preference really. Some people like the attention. I like attention too, but not from everybody... just a few good friends would do.

7) What plans do you have for Memory Lane?

To be honest, 2005 has been a rather slow year in terms of my personal development. Therefore you may find that sometimes I do not update as regularly as I would like to. Of course it goes without saying that work does come in the way (or is it the other way round?) and I need to prioritise. Due to budget constraints and work commitments, travelling would be minimal at the end of this year. However, I hope to be able to cover some places of interest in Kuching which you would not normally visit if you follow a standard tour group. Sarawak is a place with much to offer, and I am working on the sights and scenes of Kuching, to let all of you have a better idea of what its like to stay and work here.

So you can expect to have more travel pics/food pics as I venture into the newly established eateries in town, or some secret hideaway which no one knows about...

My involvement in music will also mean that I would be updating readers with concerts I have attended, introducing new musicians I have seen on tv or in person. For those who are not into music I do apologise... but I need to keep a record of what I have been doing in the music field so far, so please bear with me. :)

Fourthly, I will also be following closely the development of China, and you can expect me to put in my two cent's worth on some issues concerning the politics, economics, etc...for those of you who need first hand advice on finance and econs, go to Peter's blog. Its absolutely fantastic!

8) What are you working on at the moment?

My ongoing project at the moment is my Nanowrimo attempt this November. As stated earlier I would be writing a novel beginning 1st Nov and attempt to hit 50,000 words on 30 November local time. With my work commitments it would appear to be an uphill climb, but I want to challenge myself and put myself to the test. I know that I work best under pressure... sad I know. Thanks to you all who have been giving me support and blessings! I will attempt to acknowledge each and every one of you in my ahem, novel. :)

So... there you have it. One year on, 8 questions answered. Long winded, maybe. Honest truth? You bet.
Happy Birthday Memory Lane! May you have more happy birthdays to come...
Special thanks goes to Peter, Wil and Benji who gave Memory Lane an early birthday greeting. My heartfelt appreciation also goes to Archangel, SH, Vinny for your kind support in my Nanowrimo attempt. I will not dissappoint you. :D

May the force be with us all.

Memory Lane makes it to the 2005 pageviews mark!

Dear friends,
Today Memory Lane hit 2005 pageviews! And it would not have been possible if you, my dear readers and friends have not given me your undying support. While probloggers would probably scorn at me for making such a hoohah over 2005 pageviews (they rake in probably 4,000 hits per day, even more), but for a blog which was never publicised in the first place (I don't ping PPS), and which contains content which are mainly thoughts and musings from my heart, I think it is quite amazing that people from all over the globe have found their way to my little world here. :) Hugs to you all.

Memory Lane has been online since October last year, but I only started using Onestat in June this year. I wonder how many pageviews I would have got had I used Onestat the first day I started blogging? hehhe.

I would personally recommend using www.onestat.com to monitor your daily visitors and to get an idea of who comes to visit you. I have to thank 5xmom for this, she introduced me to Onestat as well as Technorati. It gives you a warm feeling to know that there are people who actually drop by, and even if they dont say hi, I hope they leave with happiness...
Here's a screenshot to commemorate the day Memory Lane hit 2005! Woohoo!

Thank you so much again!

Note: There are 5 days until Memory Lane's first birthday!
Birthday dedications are welcome, hehehee

An amazing discovery? Or not?

I had always been mistaken for someone who has native heritage. The earliest comments I received was when I was working in JB. I was either mistaken as Malay, Iban, or mixed. I guess it didn't help that I don't speak Malay with a Phua Chu Kang slang. I just don't.

People say that its my eyes. "Orang Cina biasa kan mata sepet". Ok, so I have double eyelids... so do tons of other chinese descendants. So hmmm... I wonder why.

Until, my mom told me that we could trace our roots back to the native community in the 2nd division of Sarawak.
You see, on my mom's side, her grandmother and her great-grandmother were actually peranakan people, who wore sarongs and kebayas, ate "daun sirih", made belacans. etc. Her late mother, my maternal grandmother, wore sarongs for life and had her hair in a bun as long as I could remember. Our features are somewhat native-ish, I guess (I have thick lips, big nose and big eyes, guess that says a lot). And my maternal great grandfather, my mom's maternal grandfather, looked like a mat salleh, with deep set eyes and a pointed nose.

You know what this means, right? It means that I am also part of the bangsa lain category then! Hahaha... mom said that "no wonder you kids are so bright, you had genes of the natives and ang mohs, plus your paternal grandfather's genes from China, a mixture of east and west..."
Well... it adds a bit of flavour to our family conversations nowadays... mom even said that perhaps one of the Rajahs could have been our relatives, hahahahaha

Just for laughs ok folks? I am still registered as "cinapek" in the National Registration Department.

Right... four years exactly into working life and suddenly I found the urgent need to ramble about my not so interesting life...here goes:

I am:
Liberal and radical on paper only. This is the basic description I would give myself. I am a good listener and usually offer sensible advice. If I don't sound like myself, its must be my evil twin at work :P

I am passionate about:
Music and Arts. Can't imagine what this world would be like without these two essential elements.

When I'm not working my head off I like:
Meeting new people from all walks of life and listening to their life experiences. I take things with an open mind (albeit not completely Zen like) and always remind myself not to take anything in life for granted.
And I wish:
All my friends, my family and everybody else who will somehow cross paths with me, a fulfulling life, in terms of work and relationships. And remember, you only live once. So make the best out of it. :)
