Some updates on the "Go Home" statement

Note: this is an update following the infamous "Go Home" statement issued by Datuk Noh targeted at foreigners who claimed Malaysian police are brutal.

Go to Jeff Ooi's post for the latest updates.

While it cannot be denied that damage has been done to the reputation of our country, our PM has done the least that he can do. See the following excerpt from Bernama news:
'The Prime Minister has described as inappropriate a remark by Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Noh Omar who asked foreigners to go back to their own country if they find the Malaysian police cruel.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told Bernama Wednesday that Noh had touched on the government's policy on tourism which really welcomed foreigners whether to visit, study, receive medical treatment or conduct their business operation here.

"Government servants should be more sensitive and careful when issuing statements on the issue.

"I have advised Datuk Noh Omar on the matter," said the premier.

This issue has been widely reported in international media. See BBC news. Personally, I do like our PM. I am sure he is trying very hard to set the record straight in respect of this incident. However, with the recent hoohah, it is not going to be easy to mend the ties which has been somewhat severed between China and Malaysia.

The key word here is of course, sincerity. Compare our current situation with that between Japan and China (the whitewashing of WWII history in Japanese textbooks). Where an apology lacks sincerity, it is worse off than not apologising at all. Datuk Azmi is going to have a lot of explaining to do when he goes to China on 20 Dec. I hope his trip will be fruitful.

Just stop and think for a while-how would we feel if we were asked to strip and do ear-squats by the Gong-An in China? If that makes you feel infuriated, then that's how the Chinese nationals feel when they have been subject to derogatory treatment by the police force in our country.

China's views:

Some excerpts from the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Press Conference on 29.11.2005:

Q: It is reported that Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs scheduled to visit China tomorrow. Now, his visit has been postponed to December 20. Please confirm. If China requested the postponement, why did China do so? Recently, several incidents of insulting Chinese women occurred successively in Malaysia. What impact will these incidents have on China's relations with Malaysia?

A: Regarding the visit of Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs, as far as I know, China and Malaysia have been staying in consultation on this matter, including the schedule of his visit. When this visit would start will be up to the convenience of both sides. We welcome the visit of Malaysian Home Affairs Minister, when we shall exchange views on bilateral cooperation and other relevant questions.

On your second question, what I wish to emphasize is that the Chinese Government has consistently attached importance to the protection of legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens. The Foreign Ministry and Chinese embassy in Malaysia have expressed their concern over the incident of insulting Chinese citizens and made solemn representations to the Malaysian side on many occasions, requiring them to start investigation immediately and seriously punish the perpetrators. We have taken note that Malaysian senior officials have apologized for the incidents and ordered investigation. China will continue to urge Malaysia to take effective measures to on the one hand, find out truth and punish perpetrators and on the other hand, ensure the dignity and personal safety of the Chinese citizens in Malaysia, so as to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.

So Malaysia, buckle up!

Don't discriminate?

Here's what I read in on Bernama news this morning:

Abdullah - Don't Discriminate Community To Which The Terrorists Belong

From Amer Hamzah Md Sap

VALLETTA (MALTA), Nov 28 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has called on the world community not to alienate or discriminate the community to which the terrorists belong.
The Prime Minister said the terrorists must be seen and assessed in isolation and on what they were trying to do, if the world community understood the terrorists' problems, they could then deal with the matter effectively.
However, there was no one suitable formula in countering the problem in view of the many circumstances that led to terrorism, he told Malaysian and international pressmen, here Sunday night.
He was asked on the issue of terrorism which was one of the 103 points contained in the final communique at the end of the three-day Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The Commonwealth Heads of Government had also issued separate statements on Sunday on the Gozo Statement on Vulnerable Small States and Networking the Commonwealth for Development.
On Saturday, the Heads of Government issued another separate statement known as the Valletta Statement on Multilateral Trade.
Abdullah said profiling terrorists with a certain community was akin to giving them support.
He said he was happy that this issue was included in the declaration and Malaysia had emphasized on the importance of understanding the condition under which the perpetrators were operating and the circumstances that pushed them to commit terrorism.
These were all to be regarded as the causes as to why they had resorted to terrorism which Malaysia had always talked about, the Prime Minister said.
"Based on our experience, it is important that we must know the reasons and the conditions that forced them to do it," he said.
On the whole, the Prime Minister said he was happy that the CHOGM's new format had given ample time for all the Heads of Government to express their views openly.
He was also happy with all the arrangements made by the Maltese government to ensure the success the CHOGM.
Also present were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar and Malaysian Ambassador to Libya, Datuk Zulkifli Yaacob, who is also accredited as the High Commissioner to Malta.

On 26.11.2005, I read this in the Star:

Azmi to convey ‘no profiling’ stand

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian authorities are not “profiling” young, female Chinese nationals who enter the country as likely to indulge in vice activities, including prostitution.

This is the message that Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid will convey during his week-long working trip to China from Wednesday.

The Prime Minister had ordered Azmi to go to China to clear any misconception that Malaysian authorities were targeting Chinese nationals, especially women coming to Malaysia.

Recently, three Chinese women claimed that their money was stolen, that they were forced to strip, and were peeped at by male officers when bathing while under police detention.

“I will visit three cities to convince the Chinese authorities and people that recent reports from Malaysia pertaining to their citizens in our country do not reflect the full picture. We welcome visitors from China and hope they continue to visit our country.

“Nevertheless, I will also impress on the Chinese authorities that action will be taken against those who violate our laws,” he told reporters after presenting awards for the National Registration Department’s Quality Day.

Asked if he would apologise to the Chinese Government for the recent incidents involving Chinese nationals, Azmi said: “We will apologise where we are wrong. There is nothing wrong in apologising if there is a mistake.”

Azmi said the Chinese Embassy here was also aware of the Government’s tough stand and agreed that action should be taken against its citizens who committed crimes or offences while in Malaysia.

The minister said the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing was making the necessary arrangements for his meetings with the Chinese authorities.

Asked if ties between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing had been strained following the spate of complaints by Chinese women of being subjected to humiliation and wrongful treatment while under police custody, the minister said this had yet to be determined.

On the Tourism Ministry’s claim that Chinese tourists dropped by 48% between January and August this year, Azmi said statistics compiled by the Immigration department showed otherwise.

“I have asked the department to give me a full list of foreigners who had entered Malaysia and who had left or had not. In this way, we can try to detect their whereabouts,” he added.

On the controversial video clip showing a naked woman doing ear squats before another woman in uniform, Azmi urged police not only to focus their investigations on who had recorded the incident but also who had ordered the ear squats.

“Police can haul up individuals in the course of investigations but the persons should not be subjected to such acts.

“The recording shows that such incidents happened and this needed to be addressed. I cannot be travelling overseas to try and convince people if the situation back home is different,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Leo Michael Toyad said they would double their efforts in promoting Malaysia in China to ensure visitors from the country continue coming here.

“We are not disheartened, even slightly, by what has happened.

“We will do our best to ensure they keep coming,” he said after a media launch of the Year End Sale 2005 at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had spoken to the Tourism Minister of China on the controversial issues.

“I have met him and he understood the situation. In his opinion, this is just an individual case,” he said yesterday in a phone interview from China. He is there to promote Malaysia to Chinese tourists.

Ahmad Zahid also said Immigration personnel must be more tactful when dealing with tourists.

Nanowrimo Mission Accomplished! 50175 words @ 21.11.2005

Ladies and gentlemen,
My novel entitled "Shades of Grey" made the 50,000 word limit today. In other words, I have managed to achieve the goal of writing a 50,000 word novel in the span of 30 days (and less!). I will be completing the story in my own time since I have achieved the required target.
Please be patient as I polish my story... and as promised, all who have commented in my nano blog will be featured in my "acknowledgement" page.

Special thanks goes to the following people:

My family: My brother. There is only one pc at home and as you can imagine, he had to put up with my incessant typing throughout the nights, me firing my fingers on the keyboard mercilessly as he covers his head with pillows and whatever he can get his hands on, to block out the noise pollution I am creating.

My mother, for her kind patience and tolerance during these 21 days. What consisted of mother-daughter bonding sessions during weekends were replaced mercilessly with endless hours of typing at the computer. She has been most supportive during my debut attempt at Nanowrimo and I truly thank her for that.

My sister, who has given up her internet time for me so that I could complete this formidable task well before the deadline. Thank you!

My friends:

1)Vinny, who has just turned 25 yesterday, for her undying support. This would not have been possible without her daily emails, giving me encouragement and positive thoughts. Thank you so much!

2) Archangel, for his encouragement and saying that "Come on, you can like type dunno how many words in an email alone, what more to say this?" Yeah, just in case you didn't know, that was what kept me going. :P

3) Wil for dropping by and giving me the fuel that I need;

4) Songie for her support; Hugs!

5) Peter for his support;

6) Carolyn, for her support and encouragement;

And all those whom I have not had the opportunity to express my gratitude.

Thank you all. This would not have been possible without all of you.

Happy Birthday Vinny!

This birthday dedication is for my best friend, Madam Vinny who turns 25 today. She is also currently basking in marital bliss. She has been a great friend, an avid supporter of everything that I do, and she always offers good advice when I need it. She keeps me on my toes.
Dearest Vinny, on this special day, I truly wish you all the best and may you enjoy eternal bliss with your darling. Thank you for being such a great friend... it is my honour to know you. Thanks for all your kind words of support and encouragement.
May you be happy always.
Cheers! (Holds my cup of milo in front of the computer)
Take care and Happy Birthday!

Profile

Right... four years exactly into working life and suddenly I found the urgent need to ramble about my not so interesting life...here goes:

I am:
Liberal and radical on paper only. This is the basic description I would give myself. I am a good listener and usually offer sensible advice. If I don't sound like myself, its must be my evil twin at work :P

I am passionate about:
Music and Arts. Can't imagine what this world would be like without these two essential elements.

When I'm not working my head off I like:
Meeting new people from all walks of life and listening to their life experiences. I take things with an open mind (albeit not completely Zen like) and always remind myself not to take anything in life for granted.
And I wish:
All my friends, my family and everybody else who will somehow cross paths with me, a fulfulling life, in terms of work and relationships. And remember, you only live once. So make the best out of it. :)
